CHAPTER 19

When Rav woke up there was no way to tell how much time had passed. The lights in the library remained the same and all he could see was Gorjin had moved down the aisle to the next bookcase, but he couldn’t tell if it was because he had finished reading all the books or was looking for something more substantial. Rav pulled out some lunch from his void pouch before he went out exploring again. After he had settled his stomach, he walked out of the library with his uncle being none the wiser. He meandered down the halls, being careful to keep an eye open for any of Vicious’s handy work and for any ethereal presence that shouldn’t exist, but the whole mansion was eerily quiet. Even Rav’s footsteps didn’t make a sound against the soft carpet that had been draped over the stone floor.

He tried to find the room that he had seen in his father’s diary, but the image he had seen of it could have been anywhere. The mansion was huge and all of the doors were locked. Rav was fearful that if he started breaking open doors, his uncle would hear him and his freedom to explore the mansion would go out the window. He needed to be patient. He knew he had time, but the piece of paper that he had used to communicate with his father had become so full of ink that there wasn’t a clear space of page left for him to ask any questions and his father had told him there was no way for him to get more. Whatever favor he had called to get the communication paper to Rav was only good for a one time call. There were no records telling what could be outside the fog wall, but he had fought some of the monsters that got lost and made their way to his farm. It was enough to get an idea of what was waiting for him and he needed to save whatever paper was left for when he was able to get through the fog wall. He would need his dad to give him directions so he didn’t end up getting lost, captured or worse when he finally made his way out.

As he wandered the twists and turns of the mansion, Rav found something that caught his attention. He had followed a pair of stairs that led downward for longer than they had any right to. The stairs wound down multiple floors with their own landings and doors to rooms underneath the mansion. Rav ignored them for now. He wanted to know how deep the mansion went and how a family, even one as powerful as the Arch family could possibly dig this deeply into the ground.

When he reached the bottom floor, he was greeted with what looked like someone’s home. The walls were high and there was even fauna inside the basement. The lights that floated in the library were here as well and must have acted like sunlight to the plants as they grew.
